New to Yachting

  • Writer's pictureYPI CREW

YPI CREW's Laurence and Ulrica have recently returned from the Antigua Charter Yacht Show 2016 and reported another successful event. Between 4th and 10th December, Antigua's English Harbour hosted yachting professionals, parties, and some of the world's most luxurious superyachts. Aside from networking, the purpose of the trip was to visit our clients, particularly our captains and placed crewmembers. It was a wonderful opportunity to see our crews in action on their yachts.

The Competitions

One the most interesting events at the Antigua Yacht Show was the annual Chefs Competition. This annual culinary contest is an essential component of the show as it allows yacht chefs to showcase their creativity and culinary skills. Charter vessels experience a very busy season if their chef wins the competition, so a great deal is at stake. Every year, there is a different theme for the contest; this year, competing chefs were expected to create a three course Caribbean-influenced Surf & Turf luncheon. Five experts in the industry judged the contest under three categories, depending on the size of the chefs yacht.

A tablescaping competition for stewards and stewardesses also took place. Stewards and stewardesses had to style their tables to complement their chefs menu - also incorporating aspects Caribbean flair. The winners of both contests were revealed in a prize-giving ceremony and champagne reception at the Admirals Inn, Nelsons Dockyard. Congratulations to all the winners and well done to those who took part!

On the theme of hospitality, we also enjoyed the nightly Yacht Hops. These events gave participants the opportunity to hop between yachts, sampling signature cocktails of each, as crews showcase their incredible entertainment and hosting skills.

At this year's show, the 55th edition of the event, YPI presented the custom motor yacht AXIOMA. Built by Dunya Yachts in 2013, the stunning 72m vessel has many remarkable features and amenities, including an infinity swimming pool on the main deck. She also boasts a large Jacuzzi, a gym, a massage room and a steam room on the bridge deck. The late Alberto Pinto designed AXIOMAs sumptuous interior in a contemporary beach house style, which is a refreshing deviation from the formal style usually presented on a superyacht of this class. The decor exudes a summertime feel, adding to her majesty. The finishings are of the highest quality, utilising light-coloured woods and natural fabrics.

We had a great time at the Antigua Yacht Show and we hope we get to meet more of our clients and crews at events throughout 2017. Please contact us if you would like any information about our crew placement services.
