Yacht crew salary guide

Health and wellbeing is an increasingly pivotal aspect of the superyacht experience. Exercising under the sun on the deck of a yacht is more than a postcard picture, it is the ultimate fitness retreat.

A Personal Trainer onboard a yacht is responsible for evaluating yacht owners’ and guests’ fitness levels and health conditions in order to create and implement bespoke exercise programs.

It’s important to note that, when not exercising with the clients, Personal Trainer takes on the duties of a Deckhand and assists in the Deck Department. The ratio of Personal Trainer vs. Deckhand duties will generally vary depending on the size of the yacht and the yacht owner’s requirements but the role is generally more oriented toward deck duties.

The exercise space onboard a yacht can be very different from that of an on-land gym. Personal Trainers on board are typically limited to what space they have available to them, which means sometimes training on deck, swim platform, tender garage, or a dedicated yacht gym. This will mean that some exercises will need to be adapted to the space, so being able to find good solutions will be required.

As mentioned before, in addition to this, a Personal Trainer will also take on Deckhand duties whenever they are not doing exercise sessions.

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht

All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

Without these two certificates, it is not possible for crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht. For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide.
